There is a apple tree at St John's College at Cambridge that supposedly was grafted from the apple tree at Newton's house that he watched the apple fall from. To me mentoring is like the grafting of this tree. An older man that has had many experiences tries to graft these experiences to a younger man so he doesn' t make the same mistakes and also sees the opportunities of life that might present themselves. The desire of an older mentor is to help a younger man navigate potential mistakes and opportunities. The younger man still has to navigate his course, but with the help of the older man's experiences that he has grafted into the younger man. Gary
